TULALIP The M-P sophomore team crumbled against the Lady Hawks, falling to Tulalip Heritage by a 5-to-1 margin.
Thanks to superior shooting, rebounding and defense, the Hawks held the Tomahawks scoreless throughout the second and third quarters, a stretch broken with about 4:30 left in the fourth quarter with a three-point bucket by M-Ps Nicole Phifer.
Phifer led her team with six points, but the game was ultimately all Tulalip, who won the Dec. 5 game 60-12.
Guard Rilla Jones led the Hawks with 16 points, followed closely by Lateesha Jack with 14 and Dawn Spencer with 11.
Though the score might not indicate it, the game was hardly played around one hoop. M-P and Tulalip played to an 8-7 score in the first quarter before Tulalip went on its all-out offensive. The teams drove up and down the floor with both teams taking shots at the basket, but the M-P sophomores struggled to make their shots.
With Tulalip winning the battle of the boards, it was often one and done when M-P missed their mark.
Not long after Phifers basket to put M-P in double digits, teammate Becca Ripperger had a field goal to give the Tomahawk sophomores their final score.
Tulalip Heritage follows the win with a game on the road against Clallum Bay Dec. 15 before they face local opponents Lake Stevens JV and Grace Academy Dec. 17 and 18.
