MARYSVILLE The Red Barons and New Cal met on the field undefeated, but only New Cal walked away with a perfect record.
The California won both games in an Aug. 10 doubleheader, defeating the Red Barons 11-6 in the first game and 10-0 in the second.
A close first game saw the Red Barons leading well into the game. They took the lead in the bottom of the first, with runs scored by team manager Don Spidell, as well as third baseman Mike Bombach and shortstop Tom Dyer.
The New Cal got on the board in the second inning, but were held to only one run as outfielder Norm Trowbridge ran in after a Russ Parrish fly ball earned Dogball its second out.
Then in the top of the fourth, the New Cal started looking unstoppable at the plate as they found a hole in center field. Starting with their leadoff batter, the New Cal got seven consecutive hits, all of which turned into runs.
In addition, four New Cal batters hit 3-for-3, among them Trowbridge, who led New Cal in scoring with three runs.
The Red Barons tried to come back, getting two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but they were held to just three more runs after the New Cal scoring spree. An 11th-hour, seventh-inning comeback seemed in the works as Dyer scored a second time and the Barons filled the bases. But with two outs it was a fragile opportunity, ended with a fly ball to left field.
Dogball answered each of the Barons post-spree runs, with fifth- and sixth-inning runs by their pitcher, Trowbridge, and Dan Royer.
Barons manager Spidell said he was disappointed to drop the games to the New Cal, and said he expects to meet them in the summer season playoffs.
I think that team will be our rival, most definitely. I guarantee you, that team and us will be playing for first and second. I know were a better team than what we played the other night, Spidell said, adding that one of his teams strengths is their experience as coaches.
We picked up some players in the off-season that weve coached (with) in the Marysville Little League Association, he added. We picked those other coaches up, so we have a bunch of experienced guys on our team that have played ball for awhile and coached for awhile.
