Local golfers pair with the pros in fantasy league

As Tiger Woods played his way to his 13th PGA career major victory Aug. 12, 15 members of the Cedarcrest Golf Course mens club were a little more invested in Woods tournament outcome.
Thats because mens club tournament director Joe Jones organized his own kind of fantasy golf for the clubs 20 members.
Unlike typical fantasy golf leagues in which online players depend solely upon the performance of their professional counterparts, the mens club at Cedarcrest played partners with the PGA pro of their choice.
For the vast majority of those golfers, the choice was Woods. But with the majority of fantasy golfers picking Woods, the league competition would essentially boil down to the mens club golfer.
We toyed with the idea of not allowing people to pick Tiger, but that messes with your ability to pick your favorite player, Jones said.
Still, with so many club members picking Woods, he added, several others hoped to gain an advantage by picking another professional partner in hopes that the pro would defeat Woods.
It was just a straight stroke-play event, so nothing too special there, Jones said. Some people went out on a limb and chose Scott Verplank, who finished with 71. Our gross winner chose Scott.
We went ahead and the way we did it is our mens club players played their round on Saturday, so they knew what they shot, he added. And they went home on Sunday and watched the tournament and rooted for their guy to see how it was going to pan out in the end.
