MARYSVILLE One day after the M-P junior varsity wrestling squad pinned every single Cascade Bruin they faced and their varsity counterparts prevailed 40-33, the Tommies placed ninth out of 17-teams as the hosts of the M-P Premier Tournament.
M-P tallied 104 points and placed six in the top 5 in a day full of activity at the Jim Linden Fieldhouse.
Three grapplers battled to third-place finishes while three others came in fifth place among the hundreds of student-athlete competitors.
Brian Donaldson (103-lb.) began his day with a pin over Arlingtons Justin Goheen and continued his winning ways with a 16-12 triumph over Jeffrey Condon of Omak.
In the consolation round he was victorious over Andrew Valdez of Moses Lake, 12-4, to claim a third-place medal for his efforts.
Jesse Masten pinned Codey Elledge of Monroe in the first round, lost to Corey Kleppe of Burlington-Edison, 6-4, and then triumphed over Chris Myers of neighboring Arlington by injury default.
In the heavyweight division, 275-lb. Tannon Hillis beat Nick Almelia of Mariner 10-6 in the first round before working his way through the consolation round to a third-place finish.
Hillis pinned Isidro Diaz of Omak, teammate Bryant Dickerson 4-2 and then beat Kevin Crowley of Monroe 5-1.
Jason Blevins (112-lb.) pinned Nick Mora of Granite Falls, and in the consolation round defeated Okuto Kawakita of Monroe by pin, Kellen Haynes of Arlington by pin before falling to Woo Song Do of Mariner 6-0.
Richard Templeman (125-lb.) had a first-round bye then defeated Braden Anderson of Stanwood 7-1.
After being pinned by eventual champion Matt Palmer of Moses Lake, Templeman fell to Colin Cavanaugh of Burlington-Edison 12-6 in the third-fifth place match up.
In one of the heavyweight matches, Jason Wilder pinned Rudy Jimenez of Burlington-Edison in the opening round before losing to Brett Fredericksen of Moses Lake.
Once in the consolation round, Wilder pinned Richard Bader of Lakewood and Karl Richter of Granite Falls before having his day ended with a loss to Jayde Delgado of Peninsula.
Two-time state champion and veteran coach Craig Iversen said he was pretty pleased with the overall effort of his squad.
Tannon, who finished third today, has been competing at the junior varsity level all season and did a great job today, he said.
He pointed to M-P Premier champion Moses Lake as the headliner, and said they have been a traditional power for 50 years now.
Friday, Jan. 12 M-P picked up their first Wesco North win of the season with a 40-33 road victory over Cascade.
The contest wasnt determined until the final match when Nick Libbing pinned John Cardinal of the Bruins.
M-P is now 1-4 in league competition and 3-6 overall while Cascade fell to 0-5, 0-6.
The entire M-P junior varsity team collected pins in their match sweep.
