The M-P swim and dive team dominated their Thursday, Jan. 11, Wesco North home meet against the Stanwood Spartans with a 110-73 victory.
The win improved the Tommies league record to 4-1 and 4-3 overall. Stanwood fell to 1-3, 4-4.
The meet featured one swimmer (sophomore Trevor LeValley) qualifying for the 4A state championships, 14 district qualifying times, and one Tomahawk become a titanium man.
A lot of kids are beginning to recover from the tough Christmas workouts. We just had a lot of good swims tonight and I am proud of the team, coach Scott Knowles said.
Despite the fact that it was his first time competing in the 100-yard backstroke this season, LeValley turned in a state qualifying first-place time of 57.03.
The talented and soft-spoken teen said his personal best prior to the meet was 57.48. Asked what he attributed his winning performance to, he sheepishly smiled and said it may be the combination of the Christmas workouts and the fact that hes been swimming since age five.
LeValley also touched first in the 50-yard freestyle in a 4A district-qualifying time of 24.15, and was part of two winning relay teams.
The 200-yard medley team of LeValley, seniors Klayton Schaufler and John Henninger and sophomore Andy Abadam clocked 1:49.13 and the 200-yard freestyle team of junior Aaron Goff, Henninger, LeValley and Schaufler teamed up to win in a time of 1:34.64.
Goff (2:04.48) and junior Dallis Smith (2:12.90) finished one-two in the 200-yard freestyle in respective district-qualifying times.
Sophomore Gabe Lopez finished second in the 200-yard individual medley in a district qualifying time of 2:20.98.
Joining LeValley in district-qualifying finishes in the 50-yard freestyle were seniors Henninger (24.32) and Schaufler (25.08).
M-P swept the diving competition with sophomores Ben Wilcox (154.35 points) and Jordan Grenier (144.8) leading the way. Junior Jarin Troxel completed the sweep with a third-place performance of 116 points.
Freshman Oliver Durand turned in a district-qualifying time in the 100-yard butterfly with a second-place time of 1:04.25.
In the 100-yard freestyle, the Tommies qualified three for districts: sophomore Brody Coleman (56.22 seconds), junior Ryan Shay (58.35) and Abadams time of 58.78.
Sophomore Britt Mann swam to a third-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 6:23.03.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, M-P turned in four more district qualifying times.
Durand led the team with a time of 1:10.44, Coleman was right behind at 1:10.53, Henninger clocked a 1:13.12 and freshman Brandon Caldwell came in at 1:13.82. Henninger achieved titanium man status as he has now qualified for post-season competition in every swim event this season.
Before today my best time was 1:14.6 and this year it has just been clicking for me, he said. He attributed the improvement to timing, an improved pull and five weeks of swimming in the summer.
The meets final event, the 400-yard relay, saw the Tommies sweep the junior varsity competition and their varsity counterparts came in 2-3.
The varsity second-place team of Lopez, Abadam, Schaufler and Durand clocked a time of 3:40.90 while the team of Wilcox, Shay, and seniors Alex Betchley and Neal Haney came in at 4:03.72.
