MARYSVILLE Grace Academy had no answer for league leading Lopez Islands Jordan Smith.
The 6-1 senior unleashed 33 points on the Eagles, single-handedly outscoring the home team as Grace fell to 2-3 in conference with the 51-28 loss.
A talented but young Grace team struggled to get something started in the first half, falling on the unlucky side of some open looks and missing rebounds to get a second chance. Junior Grant Weinberg got Graces only first-quarter field goal, while junior guard Brian Young had two more in the second quarter.
Down 34-6 at halftime, Grace had their work cut out for them. The score remained the same four minutes into the new half when sophomore Zac Israel hit a three-pointer. A couple of minutes later, he hit another field goal to put Grace in double figures. As Weinberg and Young each chipped in another basket, Grace outscored Lopez Island 9-4 in the period.
Thanks to seven points from another Weinberg, Grants younger brother Garrett, Grace tied their opponents output in the fourth quarter, 13 apiece. But Lopezs 28-point halftime lead was more than enough to secure the game in their favor.
No Eagle broke into double digits, but Grant and Garrett Weinberg each had seven points, while Young had six and Israel five.
In addition to Smiths 33 points, Lopez Islands Keaton Farris had 10.
Grace followed the loss with a Jan. 18 game against conference rival Highland Christian. The game took place after The Globe went to press.
