Montes, Ekdahl named Dec. students of the month

Maribel Montes and Daniel Ekdahl have been named the Marysville Soroptimist and Kiwanis students of the month for December.

MARYSVILLE — Maribel Montes and Daniel Ekdahl have been named the Marysville Soroptimist and Kiwanis students of the month for December.

Montes has made the Honor Roll and the University of Washington’s Educational Talent Search all four years of high school. In her senior year, she’s taken AP language and composition, chemistry and college algebra courses, been part of DECA Leadership, and been named the Career and Technical Education student of the quarter, in addition to being nominated for senior of the month for October.

Montes has served has a member of the Volunteer Club since her sophomore year, and as a member of the National Honor Society and a coordinator and volunteer for the DECA Oktoberfest since her junior year. As a senior, she’s served as the School for the Entrepreneur DECA Club President, a Veterans Day assembly volunteer and a member of the Senior Commencement Committee.

Montes has coordinated the Cinco De Mayo Festival all four years of high school, and volunteered on the School for the Entrepreneur food drive and the Halloween Fun Fest since her junior year. As a senior, she served as the School for the Entrepreneur representative during the Marysville School District Community Partnership Event.

In her senior year, Montes has participated in the 2009 Washington State Business Week, emceed and coordinated the School for the Entrepreneur “Welcome Back” week, attended leadership conferences for DECA and FBLA, and been nominated as the Marysville-Pilchuck School Spirit Queen.

Ekdahl is first in his class of 608 with a 4.000 cumulative GPA. He’s been a member of the Academic Knowledge Bowl from 2007-10 and the Hi-Q Team from 2008-10, becoming a state champion in the latter in 2009. He’s taken AP college physics and AP calculus as a senior, and received a college board designation of AP scholar.

Ekdahl has served as a freshman mentor and a National Honor Society member since 2008. From 2008-2009, he volunteered for freshman orientation and M-PHS campus cleanup, and in 2009, he volunteered for the Class of 2009 graduation ceremony and the Senior Cruise tear-down.

Ekdahl’s community service outside of school has included volunteering for the Marysville Community Food bank and Catholic Relief Services since 2008. He’s also volunteered for the Postman Food Collection Day in 2008 and 2009, and in 2009, he additionally volunteered for the city of Marysville Parks and Recreation Department’s Community Easter Egg Hunt.

Ekdahl has served as president of the Volunteer Club since 2008 and of the 2009-10 senior class. In 2009, he participated in “You Gotta Love This Place,” attended the Mt. Baker Leadership Camp and received the M-PHS Leadership Award.
