MARYSVILLE – At approximately 1:15 in the afternoon of Jan. 22 Marysville Fire District and Tulalip Bay Fire were dispatched to a house on fire in the 100 block of 55 Avenue NW.

First arriving crews found smoke showing from the back of the residence and upon further investigation discovered a mattress on fire in the bedroom. Crews contained the fire to the bedroom, but the family was displaced due to smoke damage, according to Kristen Thorstenson, Public Education Specialist/Public Information Officer for the Marysville Fire District.

Unfortunately, the family’s two birds did not survive, but the cat escaped without harm.

There were no injuries reported.

Red Cross is assisting the family of eight (four adults and four children). They did not have insurance. There was one working smoke alarm.

Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s office is conducting an investigation. Cause is yet to be determined. Damage is estimated at $50,000.

Remember, working smoke alarms save lives. Be sure to check yours monthly. Ten years is the life span of a smoke alarm. Smoke alarms should be on each level of your home and in any room someone sleeps.
