Kung Fu 4 Kids in Marysville to teach ‘Karate Kids’ to stop bullying

Carlton Doup hopes to turn the release of "The Karate Kid" remake in movie theaters into a real-life lesson on stopping bullying.

MARYSVILLE — Carlton Doup hopes to turn the release of “The Karate Kid” remake in movie theaters into a real-life lesson on stopping bullying.

Doup is the “sifu,” or teacher, at Kung Fu 4 Kids in Marysville, and will be offering free bullying prevention lessons June 12 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Marysville Regal Cinemas at 9811 State Ave., in conjunction with the June 11-13 weekend premiere of “The Karate Kid.”

“Regal Cinemas asked us to come out that Saturday, to spice things up by offering these classes,” Doup said. “It really fits, because the story of ‘The Karate Kid’ is all about kids defending themselves from bullying.”

Those who attend the June 12 showings of “The Karate Kid” at Marysville Regal Cinemas, along with Doup’s anti-bullying seminars during that time, will receive free passes for further anti-bullying workshops, which Doup plans to conduct just before the start of the 2010-11 school year.

“They can use those passes to go online and pre-register,” Doup said. “Those workshops tend to fill up fast.”

Doup will be offering different lessons targeted specifically toward parents, children, educators and community leaders.

In the meantime, Doup’s Facebook group, called “Bully Prevention for Marysville Washington,” has seen its online traffic take off.

“We’re having a lot more interactions and discussions there,” Doup said. “I’m posting weekly statistics and tips on bullying prevention. Plus, it links to a lot of other online resources.”

Starting June 21 and running through the rest of the summer, Kung Fu 4 Kids will also be conducting its summer camp, which Doup described as focusing heavily on bullying prevention as well.

“It’s not just about avoiding bullying, but also recognizing bullying as a bystander and doing what you can to help those being bullied,” said Doup, who’s also scheduled to conduct a self-defense class during the June 5 Healthy Communities Challenge Day. “June is going to be a powerful month for anti-bullying.”

Kung Fu 4 Kids is located at 804 Cedar Ave. and is online.
