MARYSVILLE Is it too soon to call them a dynasty?
The WELCO Lumber team of Calvin Burlingame, Fred Guzman, Greg Baker and Jeff Baker won the Strawberry Festival Golf Tournament for the second consecutive year at Cedarcrest Golf Course on June 8.
The quartet took the tournament title with a 58-stroke performance on the par 72 course, playing in the four-man scramble format. Under the scramble rules, each player on a team hits the ball, and play continues from the best stroke.
With one stroke dividing the first- and second-place teams, it probably helped Team WELCO that team member Greg Baker also won the tournaments longest drive prize.
Coming in with 59 strokes, the team of Dennis Johnson, Gordy Rowe, John Batt and Harvey Toy finished in second place.
The Edward Jones team of Steve Muller, Tony Manzanaarez and Mike Marzoff won third-place honors. Two teams finished the Cedarcrest course with 60 strokes, but the Edward Jones team took the bronze with a better score on Cedarcrests toughest hole.
Tournament organizer Angie Miller commented that all of the teams played very well.
But, she added, no individual did well enough to win any of the tournaments hole-in-one prizes, which include a car from sponsor Roy Robinson.
He was bummed. He said, Nobody won it again?! Miller said. I think he would like to give it away once.
In the years Miller has organized the golf tournament for the Strawberry Festival, no one has gotten a hole in one. Other hole-in-one prizes going unclaimed this year include a four-day, five-night trip, 36 dozen golf balls and a new driver, she said.
Golfer Jodi Widmann is no stranger to Strawberry Festival tournament honors. After winning womens individual honors two years ago, Widmann took home two trophies this year. Though her team didnt place, Widmann took the tournament prize for womens closest to the pin and womens longest drive.
On the flip side was Matthew Schriber, who was recognized during award ceremonies with a trophy for most lost golf balls.
Though two players from the North County Bank team came in with five lost a piece, Schriber said, I stopped counting at eight.
Miller estimated the tournament raised about $3,000 for the Strawberry Festivals scholarship fund, which provides scholarships to the festival royalty in exchange for promoting the festival.
Its better this year than last year, and its right up there with our top year, she said.
