MARYSVILLE — Pride makes men do funny things.
Like eat strawberry shortcake without the use of their hands, or jump into a pit of Jell-O on a cool summer evening.
“It comes down to the bragging rights for the rest of the year,” said Marysville Rotary’s Chris Nation, who helped organize the trike races for the city’s Strawberry Festival this year.
Teams from North County Bank and Golden Corral won their respective contests as the races moved from Waterfront Park to Asbery Field near Totem Middle School June 19.
After initial registration numbers were down this year, the annual relay event actually wound up with a better turnout than recent years. The rain couldn’t keep the 14 teams from competing despite the straight-from-the-fire-hose temperatures in the Jell-O pool.
When one team was unable to compete, organizers even found four fans of the races who formed a Scooby Doo team to race the Marysville Fire Department.
“Probably out of the whole festival, this event is the biggest draw,” Nation added. “It brings in community members from all walks of life.”
Golden Corral No. 3, made up of Mike Chambers, Roberto Rubin, Jose Horwbeck and Tony Hayburn won the competitive contest, with a team formed of three to four men. Their time of 7:50 was the fastest of any and the only one to break eight minutes. They raced Roy Robinson Chevrolet in sixth heat of the night, the team that ended up taking second place in the men’s division.
In the coed 50-50 division, the North County Bank crew of Ayla Masterman, Kyle Masterman, Heather Nield and Timothy Herdt eked out victory over I’m With The Twins, with a winning time of 10:15.
Relay legs also included basketball shooting, strawberry shortcake eating and traditional see-saws and NASCAR ramp.
