MARYSVILLE — Though a steady drizzle fell on the roughly dozen teams at the Tomahawk Classic, it was undiscriminating, slightly hampering athletes from all teams in attendance.

“I knew I had to push until the end. The meet [was] going very well, but the weather didn’t help,” said M-P junior Alisha Oden, who won the 400 despite finishing a couple of paces behind her best times this season. Oden helped lead the girls team to a narrow win of the track and field invitational over Burlington-Edison, a feat the boys also accomplished with a little more breathing room.

Many of the Tomahawks did only one or two events in the April 25 competition, resulting in a smaller number of wins. Still, the girls picked up some wins in familiar places — the girls 4×100 and 4×400 relays and senior Alexandra McDonald in the 100 hurdles. The boys’ winners were familiar to their events as well. Senior Dylan Knudson had his second first-place finish in the boys 400, setting a new personal record with a time of 52.41. Junior Mark Pangilinan and senior Travis Sanderson also won their preferred hurdling events, Pangilinan winning the shorter event and Sanderson the longer in another personal record.

The boys also had wins in the 4×100 and 4×800 relay.

The Tomahawks also picked up some key second- and third-place finishes where they earned the points critical to their wins.

McDonald and Pangilinan were runners-up in additional events, McDonald placing second in the 300 hurdles and Pangilinan setting a new personal record in the 200.

Jacob Cartas also placed highly in a pair of events, taking second in the long jump, edging teammate A.J. Kvangnes by five inches with a mark of 20-8 1/2 and third in the 100 with a time of 11.67. On the girls side, freshman Farrah Bradley took third in the 400, junior Hannah Kruetz was third in the javelin and junior Kayla Thistle was third in the 300 hurdles.
