MARYSVILLE If the M-P swim and dive team was tired after tough Christmas break workouts, they did a great job of not showing it against league foe Lake Stevens.
In their first meet of 2007 the Tommies junior varsity and varsity combined to soundly defeat the Vikings 239-114 at home.
The M-P junior varsity seemingly sank the purple and yellow Speedo wearing Vikings 124-43 and their varsity counterparts ran away with a 115-71 triumph.
How many points does it take to win a dual meet? veteran coach Scott Knowles asked his excited team afterward.
Ninety-four. Well, you guys swam great and scored 115 tonight. Great job.
In varsity action, the Tomahawks claimed six individual first-place finishes and came out on top in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Knowles said one of the keys to the meet was the one-two finish of senior John Henninger (2:14.39) and sophomore Brody Coleman (2:15.23) in the 200-yard individual medley.
Humble and friendly Henninger said it was the first time he had competed in the 200 IM this year and he was pretty happy with the result.
Between the JV and varsity squads, M-P claimed seven of the top eight spots in the 200-yard freestyle.
JV seniors Andrew Hodgins (2:13.59), and Ranin Stone (2:17.96), along with sophomore Britt Mann (2:18.07) and senior Chris Giddens (2:30.76) took the top four spots.
Varsity sophomore Trevor LeValley placed second in a time of 1:51.51 and freshman Oliver Durand was one place behind his teammate in a time of 1:59.92.
LeValley touched the wall first in the 100-yard butterfly in 56.31 seconds while JV sophomore Ian Hathaway (1:14.81) and junior Josh Helm (1:20.35) came in second and third place, respectively.
LeValleys time also qualified him for 4A districts competition.
The Tommies also dominated the 100-yard freestyle with a 1-2-3 finish in the JV race and third and fourth varsity placings.
JV sophomore Gabe Gribler (1:01.02), Stone (1:01.79) and senior Alex Betchley (1:01.85) were the top three finishers while junior Aaron Goff (55:04) and sophomore Gabe Lopez (55.46) came in third and fourth for the varsity.
Goff said he had mixed feelings about the race and felt like he couldve gone faster.
I could definitely feel it after the first 50, he said of the Christmas workouts.
He said his time was not quite the best but he is getting to the point where he can swim faster times. It makes you want to work harder.
M-P stood alone atop the podium with a clean 1-2-3 sweep of the 500-yard freestyle.
Durand touched first in 5:27.29, Coleman second in 5:37.10 and Hodgins third in 6:02.38.
Both Durand and Coleman automatically qualified for 4A districts with their times.
In varsity action, the Tomahawks 200-yard freestyle relay squads came in second and third place with times of 1:40.78 and 1:49.45.
The second-place team consisted of junior Dallis Wilcox, senior Klayton Schaufler, Durand and Goff. The third-place squad was comprised of junior Ryan Shay, Gribler, Hodgins and senior Keito Swan.
The Tommies went 1-2 in both the JV and varsity heats of the 100-yard backstroke.
JV senior Chris Giddens (1:16.92) and sophomore Josh Beamer (1:32.25) while Lopez (58.23) and John Henninger (59.05) both qualified for districts.
I did really good and dropped .45 seconds off my time, Henninger said with a smile. Now I am that much closer to the state-qualifying time of 57.90 and I want to accomplish that by next weeks Kentridge meet.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, Schaufler (1:08.09), sophomore Andy Abadam (1:11.21) both qualified for districts with first and third place finishes.
In relay action, M-P placed in the top three in both the 200-yard varsity medley and the 400-yard freestyle.
In the 200-yard medley, the team of Lopez, Abadam, LeValley and John Henninger clocked a 1:46.63 for a second-place finish while Goff, John Henninger, Lopez and LeValley teamed up to win the 400-yard relay.
The Tomahawk divers took the top three spots in both JV and varsity competition.
JV divers junior Jarin Troxel (55.55 points), freshman Trevor Bullington (49.8) and sophomore Jordan Grenier (39.2) swept the meet.
Varsity divers junior Taylor Gibson (229.8), sophomore Ben Wilcox (161.1) and his senior brother Andrew tallied 119.1 points to dominate the Vikings.
