MG to Tacoma Dome; M-P, Arlington play at Shorewood today due to coronavirus

As this year’s Marysville Getchell boys basketball continues to make school history, regional state playoff game locations today have been changed because of concerns over the coronavirus.

MG will play in the Hardwood Classic at the Tacoma Dome Wednesday morning after beating Mount Tahoma in the first round of state Friday night in Puyallup 54-51.

Meanwhile, the No. 3 ranked Marysville-Pilchuck boys team will play today at 2 p.m. against No. 6 Lake Washington, and the No. 3 ranked Arlington girls play at noon at Shorewood High School against No. 6 Kamiakin. Both local teams will advance to the Dome no matter the outcomes.

The two teams were to play at Jackson, but the location was changed when a student there was confirmed to have contracted the coronavirus.

In a must-win game, junior Malakhi Knight scored 21 points as No. 15 MG upset Mount Tahoma, ranked 10th.

Leading 52-51 with 5.1 seconds to play, junior Austin Townsend sank two free throws. Mount Tahoma missed a last second desperation shot in an attempt to send the game into overtime.

MG, 17-8, has now won four-straight must-win games.

After trailing 9-2 early, Knight scored 16 points by halftime to give the Chargers a 31-25 lead. The second half was a defensive battle, but MG still led 42-35 after three quarters.

Mount Tahoma ended the season 18-7.

Junior Josiah Koellmer and Townsend each added 13 points for MG.
