MOUNT VERNON — The Tommies continue their strong start by taking top honors at the Paul Reiman Invitational.

“It’s really nice to perform like this at a local tournament just before the holidays,” said M-P coach Craig Iversen.

What was most impressive was M-P’s depth, as seven of Iversen’s grapplers won individual titles to help score 282.5 points and propel the Tommies’ dominance in the eight-team field. The second-place team, Burlington-Edison, scored 194.

Of all the titles, one of the most impressive was Billy Almachar at 103 pounds; the M-P sophomore competed just his first varsity match at that weight.

“It’s a tough weight to fill,” said Iversen. “Billy’s a big ‘03-pounder, but he (dropped the weight) the right way by doing it slowly and dieting right.”

M-P’s depth was such that it had a pair of finalists in the 215-pound match, as Skyler Hatch defeated Thomas Hoeper, 9-5, for the title.

Other M-P winners included junior Luis Cardona (112 pounds), who pinned Blaine’s Aiden Jackson in the title match in 2:23, and 145-pounder Spencer Cynkar defeated Stanwood’s Dalton Gilmann in 1:33.

At 152 pounds, M-P senior Josh Zaborowski made quick work of LaConnor’s Dalton Zavala with a pin in 33 seconds — his second of the day — and senior Marcus Haughian (189) recorded his third pin of the day against B-E’s Jeff Bajema in 1:49.

Finally, Zach Schumann had a pair of pins at 285 pounds, one of which was against Stanwood’s Carlos Vilchris in the title match in 1:19.

The Tommies started off the season 4-0 in meets.
