MARYSVILLE — Marysville-Pilchuck football brings back some key talent this fall.

The league’s leading rusher last year, Austin Denton, will be a senior. As will be all-league defensive end Brennen Steinbaugh and cornerback Chris Larson.

But there are also some glaring holes. Who will round out the running back corps that punishes defenses for focusing too much on one player? Who will step in for the all-league, all-senior offensive line that won the respect of opposing coaches? And who will be making the calls in the huddle?

“That’s what camp’s about, trying guys out,” said M-P football coach Brandon Carson, who is gearing up for his third season running the Tomahawk program that finished the regular season undefeated last year, 9-0.

The two-week camp wrapped up June 12 in a two-day session for incoming freshmen. Then, the team goes on to Willamette University in Oregon later this month, where they’ll fine tune and match players to holes.

Leading the team through camp June 9 was captains Zach Hanson and Brett Parsons. Hanson backed up senior quarterbacks Devin Peterson and Nick Forsythe last year and was one player to take snaps under center as the team went through offensive plays. Parsons is one of five underclassmen who garnered league recognition last year, playing defensive tackle. He was also listed as a center.

Carson said he looks to his veteran players like Hanson, Parsons and Larson who know what camp is all about to lead the team.

“Those guys are having a great camp for us,” he said. “We’re having a good time out here, getting our fundamentals taken care of.”
