MARYSVILLE — New coach Meredith Jenks is having fun getting to know her swimmers.

Against Cascade, Dec. 9, each Tommie got to pick one race in which they don’t normally compete, and the result was a 117-71 Wesco North victory.

“We had a mixed lineup,” said Jenks. “And what I saw today was a bunch of swimmers going out of their comfort zone and really competing well.”

The undefeated (3-0) Tommies won just six events, but saw their depth become the decisive factor, as they took two of the top three spots in all 12 races.

“We went into this meet knowing that our significant depth would be what would help clean up most of the other spots in races we didn’t win,” Jenks said.

Senior Spencer Girard finished the meet with a pair of top finishes. He finished first in the 200 freestyle race with a state-qualifying time of 1:50.28, and first in the 100 fly with a time of 56.47, qualifying him for districts.

Girard was also on the winning 200-free and 400-free relay teams. In the 200, Girard, along with Drew Preston, Andrew Winquist and Josh Estella finished in 1:37.41. The winning 400 team (3:29.01) was Girard, Preston, Winquist and Colin Willis.

Senior Robbie Haynes was first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.64, and senior Kraymer Lorig was first in the 1-meter dive with a score of 162.50.

Jenks pointed out that junior Jon Ell, who finished second in the breaststroke, was one of the highlights of the day, as he beat his personal best with a 1:11.54 time, already qualifying him for districts.
