FEDERAL WAY M-P junior Trevor LeValley broke two of his own school records in the state swim meet prelimiaries Feb. 15.
With a time of 1:55.20 in the 200 individual medley, LeValley earned his first-ever All-American consideration time and won the meets fastest heat. As the victor on the first day, the Tomahawk got to select the song that would play as the event finalists entered the gym on the meets second day.
LeValley picked Queens Dont Stop Me Now. He finished third in the final, swimming a 1:56.75. He was edged for the championship by two very familiar rivals Oak Harbor junior John Hu and Snohomish sophomore Garren Reichel, who cruised to times under 1:55 for first and second place.
Out of 13 state berths, 10 qualified for the second-day finals outright and an 11th as an alternate.
With third place in each event, LeValleys 200 IM and 500 freestyle were the Tomahawks top finishes on their way to a sixth-place team score.
Joining LeValley in the 500 finals were sophomore Oliver Durand and freshman Spencer Girard, each of whom also qualified for a second swim in a second individual event.
Girard has his eye on a school record of his own, but he didnt mention going after LeValleys new 500 mark.
My number one goal was to break a record thats been on the record board for 20 years, said the freshman and younger sibling of another M-P record holder, Kamille Girard, of the 100 breaststroke. Thats my number one goal to break it and break it every year.
Girard improved by more than a second over his preliminary swim for a 1:03.19 final, but has more than a second to go before surpassing the mark M-P alum Bill Hodgins set in the early 1980s.
Girard and LeValley each swam a leg of the Tomahawks 200 medley relay that finished sixth overall and earned medals for its participants. Junior Gabe Lopez swam backstroke and senior Aaron Goff freestyled as M-P swam a 1:43.41.
Durand and Lopez took 15th place each in individual events Durand in the 200 freestyle and Lopez in the 100 freestyle.
Senior Taylor Gibson took seventh in his third state diving appearance, closing on several divers with improvements in his final three dives over the first eight he threw during preliminaries the night before.
It was a lot of fun, summed up coach Scott Knowles. They swam hard. We got a lot of kids that placed this year.
