MARYSVILLE The Lady Tomahawks had three players in double digits in their win over Kamiak, lighting up the scoreboards for a 67-52 win in the non-conference meeting.
After playing to a 33-18 halftime score, Kamiak came back and made it a contest, outscoring M-P 22-6 in the third quarter to trail by one in the fourth quarter. Junior Britt Harris and seniors Jessica Masters and Shaelei Lucas answered the call, combining for 21 points in the period to rally.
We have a problem with the third quarter, said girls coach Julie Martin. Weve only been playing one quarter lately, so to play three was better.
Harris, Lucas and Masters led the team offensively, with 24, 16 and 11 points respectively. With 17 rebounds, Harris had her third double-double in as many games.
While Harris has continued to shine, Martin saw improvement in the Tomahawks team play.
Our bench was phenomenal tonight, she added of a bench led by freshman Dacia Heckendorfs eight points. When they were on the bench they were on fire and when they were on the court, they were great too.
Kamiak tried a number of aggressive looks in their effort to slow down the Tomahawks, which paid off in the short term, but backfired as M-P showed better balltending in the final eight minutes. The Knights Jordan Keller and Julia Church fouled out in the fourth quarter, and the Tommies made the most of it, shooting 10-for-14 at the line to cement their comeback.
We let them get to us. They had a great team effort and really hustled, Martin said, adding that in the fourth quarter the team was concerned with just taking care of the ball.
On top of the girls renewed play in the final period, the teams improved free-throw shooting was a nice bonus, Martin said.
We have always struggled with our free throw shooting, and were doing well this year (even though) that hasnt been our focus, she said.
