MARYSVILLE — Senior night usually evokes overwhelming emotion for seniors playing in their final home game, match or meet, but that wasn’t the case for the Tomahawks.

Marysville-Pilchuck is set to host the District 1 tournament, starting Nov. 4, so the Lady Tomahawks have a chance to earn a few more wins like the sweep (25-13, 25-19, 25-17) of Arlington, Oct. 27, in front of a home crowd.

“I think that’s why I didn’t feel all that sad,” said M-P senior Katie Peterson, whose Tommies are the No. 3 seed out of the Wesco North. “I was sad, but it still feels like we’ve got more games in here.”

Sewing up a playoff berth earlier in the week, the Tommies played like a team getting ready for the postseason, firing on all cylinders behind the service of senior Kate Vavrousek.

“Kate had just a great all-around game for us,” said M-P coach Shelly Johnson of her middle hitter, who finished with eight kills, five aces and four stuff blocks.

While the result was different in each game, a theme remained: the Eagles just couldn’t stop Tomahawks hitters, who were led by junior Hannah Watson’s 15 kills.

“Our hitters were amazing,” said Peterson, a defensive specialist.

Also having an impressive match was senior Makiya Nelson, who finished with seven kills, four aces and four blocks.

“We moved her from outside to middle and it took a little while to adjust, but she’s been much more consistent,” said Johnson.

The Tommies face the south’s No. 3 seed, Edmonds Woodway, to begin districts, and will hope to earn one of the three state berths available.

“I think we just need to build on what we have been doing,” Johnson said. “We’ve improved every week and had a lot of close matches against really good teams. We need everybody to have their top matches, where in the past it’s been one or two at a time.”
