MARYSVILLE In an offensive slugfest against Arlington, M-P came away with the win, 13-6.
We didnt pitch as well today, baseball head coach Josh Rosenbach said after the April 27 game. The ball was up a little bit and they put up good swings.
Both teams struggled with pitching to varying degrees. Nine of Marysvilles runs came against Arlington sophomore Kyle Ayres and another four against Trevor Milless. Sophomore Jerod Baker closed out for the Eagles, stepping in against Marysvilles last batter. For M-P, Sean Moser pitched the first four innings during which the Tomahawks gave up Arlingtons six runs. Junior Frankie Nelson threw the last three innings.
On the other hand, it was a great day at the plate.
Every one of the 10 Tomahawks to bat in the game had a hit and four had doubles. Nine different players had runs.
Seniors Kyle Mallory and Ricky Holm had Marysvilles first two runs, courtesy of a double to center field by Kyle Bottin in the bottom of the first inning.
An RBI double by Ayres in the next inning closed the gap 2-1, but a double play early in the bottom of the second wasnt enough to keep two more M-P runners senior outfielder Shane McKinley and junior shortstop Ryan DiMascio from finding home.
Arlingtons Caleb Scarth hit a bullet to center field in Arlingtons next offensive drive. The ball bounced off the top of the fence, falling back inside the field, giving Scarth a double and Arlington another run as teammate Jake Allen converted for the Eagles.
A single by Andrew Disotell ushered Scarth in and held Marysvilles edge to one run.
Bottin hit his second double to far right field in the fourth inning and the Tommies went on a scoring spree. Bottins hit became a run when Arlington catcher Baker fumbled the ball at home.
With McKinley and senior Michael Stevens on base and junior Mike Gange pinch running for Moser, M-P took advantage of the bases-loaded situation. A single from Riley Gilbertson brought in two runners and the Tomahawks widened their lead.
Mallory had an RBI in the same inning and Gilbertson stole home to close the third inning with a 9-3 lead.
Ayres, Baker and Milless gave Arlington its last three runs in the top of the fourth.
Milless took the mound in the bottom of the fourth, and his pitching put the responsibility for the outs on the Eagle outfield. With nearly every M-P hit an air ball to left center field, six of the last nine outs fell in the glove of the Arlington outfield.
The misses became doubles like Riley Gilbertsons hit in the fourth that fell between three fielders, and Michael Stevens in the sixth to bat in McKinley.
With the win, Rosenbach said, the Tomahawks control their own destiny in the playoff hunt. They close the regular season with a series against Oak Harbor.
We could go anywhere from third to not in the playoffs, he said. We just need to take care of our business.
