Im going to try to change everything, said the Tomahawks new football head coach. Weve got to change the way we practice, change the way we prepare both mentally and physically. I think we have to change things, but we have to pay close attention to details. A lot of people in football end up beating themselves with their mistakes. We need to limit those mistakes.
Carson said he sees discipline and simplicity as the keys to building a winning tradition at Marysville after consecutive two-win seasons.
His five seasons as M-Ps defensive coordinator follow assistant coaching stints at Ferndale and Granite Falls, where Carson said he learned from the opportunity to study other programs.
Ferndale theyve been a successful program over the years. The way they ran things there was pretty impressive. Its a real simplistic system, he said. Thats what Im going to try to devise and get everyone to buy in.
Luckily for Carson, persuading his fellow coaches should not prove much of a challenge. Along with rebuilding the program, the new coach will be rebuilding his staff, as he has
only a couple of guys coming back.
Carson said he plans to alter the Tomahawk offense, but is loath to go into any detail about what that might entail.
Though his first official day begins May 7 when the spring sports season ends he is currently the JV baseball coach Carson has been hard at work filling out his coaching staff and getting ready for the summer practice schedule since his hiring was announced April 24.
His plan for his first day on the job?
Im going to just lay out the standards and expectations, the goals, the work we have in front of us. The hard work its going to take to achieve our goals, Carson said.
Well be definitely working out all summer long. In the weight room, at speed camp, we have team camp at the end of June, so were going to get a lot of work done this summer.
Theres one thing Carson doesnt expect to change, much.
I think Ive always had a good relationship with the kids, he said, adding that he expects returning players will have to compete for their position. They already know a little bit about my expectations, although that will be a little higher now that Im the coach and not the defensive coordinator.
He added, Weve got to be organized. Theres a lot of things we have to change, and theres no time like the present to get started.
