Thanks particularly to the heavy lifting of a corps of athletes on the girls side of the Marysville-Pilchuck track team, the Tomahawks handily defeated the visiting Cascade and Stanwood teams at Quil Ceda Stadium March 29.
The margin of victory for the girls squad, which defeated the visitors 81-59-49 respectively, was larger than the boys, but the teams placed the same as M-P had 74 team points to Cascades 61.5 and Stanwoods 45.5.
The M-P girls 4×100-meter relay and 4×400 shared three legs, and a majority of the five girls involved took first place in multiple events during the invitational.
The 4×100 team of Nicolette Runyan, Megan Crenshaw, Cali Cull and Alicia Odin took first with a time of 51.88 seconds. Runyan also took top honors in the 100- and 200-meter dashes in times of 13.28 and 26.91. Cull led all comers in the triple jump and high jump with a best leap that day of 33-3 and clearing 4-10 respectively. Odin took long jump honors at 15-10.
Crenshaw ran the first leg in a 4×400 team of Cull, Runyan and Haley Nemra that finished barely a moment behind a winning Cascade relay that clocked in with a time of 4:12.87.
As she had done the week before at the Lake Stevens invitational, M-P freshman and cross country veteran Kaylie Kimmell ran the winning 1,600, her 5:32.49 time a full six seconds better than her last competitive race.
Robin Mueller rounded out the M-P girls golden performances, her 10-foot pole vault three inches shorter than against Lake Stevens but still good for a first-place finish.
The boys teams biggest wins came in field events. Several of the best field performances dipped slightly from the previous weeks as Kenny Yorks 150-10 javelin toss was only slightly less impressive than the 156 he threw March 21 and still plenty to win. Duane LaPeyris 5-11 high jump was an inch shorter than his last in competition but good for first and LaPeyri came out on top in the triple jump with a winning 39-7. Thrower
Another M-P thrower took first in a pair of field events Fono Vakalahi had the meets best shot put and discus throws at 47-9 and 143-8 respectively.
M-Ps eye-popping 4×100 relay finish in 44.2 set at Lake Stevens was bested by the Cascade relay that finished in 44.15, but the boys 4×400 relay outran all others in 3:44.17.
