One lesson that the Lady Tomahawks may have taken away from their 41-31 Wesco North loss to Snohomish was the need to work on free throws.
M-P was only able to convert five of 15 from the free-throw line Monday, Jan. 22 and seemingly let a 27-26 lead turn into a 9-point road loss.
The red and white clad visitors looked to be in control early as they took an 11-4 first quarter that was cut to 11-7 with a buzzer-beating Snohomish three-pointer.
Sophomore post player Britt Harris poured in four points and senior guard Nancy Couls added a hoop to stretch the lead to 17-11, but a number of turnovers allowed the Lady Panthers to knot the score at 17-all with 3:45 remaining before halftime.
M-P missed four free-throw opportunities and Snohomish continued their hot hand, taking a 26-17 lead into the locker room.
A fiery halftime speech or pure embarrassment from their second-quarter performance saw the Lady Tomahawks emerge from the locker room to blank Snohomish 10-0 in the third quarter.
Couls led the charge with a perfect 2-for-2 performance from the charity stripe to cut the deficit to 26-19 and junior forward Jessica Masters added a hoop of her for a 26-21 tally.
Sophomore guard Jessica Nielsen and Masters each added three-pointers to quiet the home crowd and give the resurgent Lady Tommies a one-point edge at 27-26.
Snohomish ended their scoring drought with 6:55 remaining in the ball game and tallied one more to make four unanswered points early in the final quarter.
Junior guard Anna West was a perfect 2-for-2 from the charity stripe to make it a 30-29 ballgame, and Couls repeated the feat to pull her team within three at 34-31.
Coach Julie Martin ran onto the court and frantically yelled for a timeout, and M-P began fouling Snohomish with every touch of the ball.
The final 45 seconds of play turned in a free-throw exhibition from the white and red hosts and what once seemed like a road victory turned into a 40-31 defeat.
