Lakewood wrestling gets punished

LAKEWOOD — The Cougar wrestlers came into their Jan. 15 league match determined to prove themselves a strong team. Unfortunately, many matches didn’t go their way and eventually lost their meet 51-24 to the Wildcats of Archbishop High School (1-1, 2-4 overall). Most weight classes were decided quickly through Wildcat pins. Lakewood (0-2, 1-2 overall) didn’t have many bright moments in this match.

Senior captain Billy McKeever pinned his opponent in the 160-pound weight class with a time of 1:43 minutes, while in the 125-pound weight class freshmen Steven Speer pinned his Wildcat wrestler with a time of 39 seconds. The most interesting match came from the 152-weight class, where Wildcat Caleb Smith won a 7-5 decision against Lakewood senior Jason Mueller. Cougar wins by forfeit were junior Joe Barber at the 189-pound weight class, and junior Travis Givler at the 215-pound weight class.

After the match, McKeever explained, “The younger players did well, but some of our matches went the wrong way. We need to get fired up and ready to go for the next match. It’s almost towards the end of the season, so we need to shape up to sprint for the finish line.”
