Lakewood girls lord over Fife

LAKEWOOD — The Lakewood girls had a 14-2 lead by the end of the first quarter. Things never got much easier for the visiting Fife basketball team after that.

The Lakewood cagers cruised to a 48-23 win over the Lady Trojans on Dec. 30 despite the havoc weather conditions had released on area teams’ practice and game schedules.

Although there were mistakes on both sides of the ball — the teams had a combined 38 turnovers — there were bright spots for Lakewood. The early lead afforded the bench some quality playing time throughout the game. Nine of the 10 girls on the roster scored. Additionally, three players were perfect from the free-throw line. Senior Anna Work, junior Maria Wiederkehr and sophomore Lauryn Smith combined for 8-for-8 shooting from the charity stripe, and senior Jocelyn Shafer was 4-for-5.

Work led the Lakewood effort with a game-high 17 points, making it a double-double with 11 steals. While no other player on either team broke into double-digit scoring, freshman Kaylee Diggs added 10 rebounds to her four points.

Lakewood resumes its league schedule Jan. 9 at home against King’s. The girls will enjoy home-court advantage in five of their next seven contests, visiting only Archbishop Murphy and Cedarcrest in January.
