LAKEWOOD — If people think the Seattle Sounders FC is exciting, they haven’t experienced a Lakewood boys soccer game yet.

Last week, the two-win Cougars continued their winning ways by defeating South Whidbey 1-0 on March 23 and King’s 2-1 in a 5-4 shootout on March 27.

As senior defender Quinton Baldwin put it, “It’s good we won both games.”

Lakewood came into the game against South Whidbey determined and focused. The fourth minute into the game, senior captain Craig Hooks scored. The rest of the game belonged to the defense, even when defender Brandon Ochoa went down with an injury. Lakewood’s offense was not performing the way it had in the beginning of the game.

“Our game is using our midfield and passing the ball around so we can score. In the second half, we started launching the ball and hoped one of our forwards would get it and score,” said senior defender Jeremy Webb.

Against King’s, Lakewood continued to have trouble moving the ball forward. King’s scored about halfway through the first half. The Cougars got through King’s defense multiple times but had their score erased due to offsides calls. Finally, with 5:10 left in the game, Hooks tied the game at one apiece.

After two well-played overtimes, the game was going to a sudden-death penalty kick shootout. The Knights scored first and led after Hooks missed his chance. But Lakewood didn’t missed another PK shot afterward. Senior keeper James Hoback blocked King’s third and sixth shots. Webb took the winning shot to finish the game.

Coach Vaughn Vandelac was relieved with the win.

“Our goalie came up big for us,” he said.
