Fritz K’s 10 in shutout while Marysville gets 15 hits

MARYSVILLE — The Lady Tomahawks got the familiar feeling of a Wesco North softball win in its first conference game of the season.

It might have taken a couple of innings for the offense to wake up, but Marysville-Pilchuck started the conference season where it left off in 2010: perfect.

“It was nice to get that first win and start off well in conference” said M-P coach KT Allyn. “I was pleased with the way we are playing early in the season. We’re not looking for perfection, but we’ve got to fix a few mistakes.”

Last season, the Tommies went 16-0 against Wesco North competition, and with a 10-0 win over Lake Stevens in five innings of play, March 23, that streak continues into 2011.

The Tommies dominated Lake Stevens behind a strong outing from pitcher Riley Fritz, who pitched all five innings, striking out 10 while scattering three hits.

“That’s just what Riley does,” said Allyn. “Her pitches were on and she’s always been able to look at every situation with the same intensity.”

The Tommies lacked that sense of urgency at the plate in the first couple of innings. Although five M-P hitters reached base in those innings, they got just one run across.

“We can’t just be satisfied with 10-running them today,” said Allyn. “We’ve got to look at the mistakes we made some base-running mistakes and not catching all of our signs.”

But in the third inning, the Tommies scored a pair of runs on an RBI single Morgan Martinis, who later came around to score on sacrifice fly by Katie Buck. Martinis finished the day going 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored.

But the catalyst of M-P’s offense was leadoff hitter Sacha Clow, who went 4-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.

“Sacha did a great job doing what a leadoff hitter is supposed to, getting on base,” said Allyn.

But Clow said that she started hitting when she saw her teammates getting hits.

“I think we got louder and picked up the intensity,” she said. “Once one person got a hit, so did the next and the next.”

The Tommies then had their first of two 3-run innings in the fourth with senior shortstop Megan Rollings providing the big hit with a two-run double. She would later score.

In all M-P had 15 hits to improve its overall record to 3-0 on the season. The Tommies play at Meadowdale March 31.
