MOUNTLAKE TERRACE As Mountlake Terrace forfeited half their matches, M-P wrestling couldnt really lose as the Hawks hosted four teams on a chilly Nov. 30 night.
It made for a short night when seven Tomahawks won by forfeit Demitri Robinson, Brandon Blevins, Jake Lervold, Luke Snomaker, Matt McChesney, Mitch Johnson and Michael Pfeiff. Another six won in competition for a 72-6 victory.
After wins by score by M-Ps Brian Donaldson in the 112 weight class and Matt Burns in the 125 weight class, the remaining five matches were determined by pins, with Mountlake Terraces Casey Finnicum taking his teams lone victory over Tomahawk James Roan.
Roan held off the returning state wrestler for a minute, grappling to gain an advantage after the Hawk pulled a surprising flip midway through their bout.
Teammate Tannon Hillis avenged his teammate in the 215 class competition, pinning the Hawks Dakota Red Cloud in just 37 seconds.
One of the teams most frustrating challenges in the Mountlake Terrace match was simply the number of forfeits, said M-P coach Craig Iverson.
Everybody likes to see an opponent. They get kind of sick of beating on each other in the wrestling room, Iverson said. Unfortunately, they didnt have a tremendous amount of wrestlers eligible with Thanksgiving. That parts kind of frustrating when some of the kids didnt get contests, but thats part of early season contests.
After three back-to-back victories by forfeit, Devin Madonia found himself in one of the most closely contested matches against Mountlake Terraces Zach Leonard in the 145 weight class. Though Leonard was rarely able to get an advantage on Madonia, it took four minutes to pin the Hawk.
In the subsequent 152 class match, Philip Klein needed three and a half minutes to pin Mountlake Terraces Blake Collins.
The pins plus Donaldson and Burns wins by points gave M-P wins in all four of the closest contests.
We were extremely happy with the guys that wrestled. It was nice getting that first win behind you, Iverson said.
