ARLINGTON A rookie and a veteran emerged from the girls wrestling regional at Arlington High School to represent Lakewood in the Mat Classic.
Junior Christina Ordonez and sophomore Keely Caldwell stormed through the opening rounds of the girls wrestling regional, pinning all opponents in their path.
Each finally fell in the regional title match.
At 130 pounds, Caldwell earned a return trip to the Tacoma Dome with a win in the semifinal in which she pinned Lake Stevens senior Natasha Grow in 3:28. The win also earned Caldwell a regional title bout against Mount Baker senior Katie Newgard. Caldwell was pinned late in the first round.
Ordonez, who is in her first season on the wrestling team, has experienced a great deal of success through the postseason. After winning the district title at 135 pounds a week earlier, the junior was named runner-up at regionals and earned a first-round bye at the state tournament Feb. 15-16.
Ordonez faced Port Angeles junior Jessica Cooper in her semifinal, emerging with a victory by pin in 3:18. By doing so, Ordonez won the right to face Olympia junior Kelsey Segawa in the final. The two dueled for three rounds before Segawa won a 9-3 decision.
Sisters Chelsea and Haley Favro each made it through two rounds of the regional tournament, but their seasons ended in Arlington.
