Natalie Hinanui-Sterett is a descendant of the Tahitian warrior Chief Toofa who led the revolution against French occupation in the 1800s. She is offering a class on the dance of the Pacific Islands at Movement Arts in Arlington from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday mornings Oct. 28 through Nov. 18.
I come from a rich Tahitian heritage of chiefs and priests, Hinanui-Sterett said. On my grandmothers side I am a descendant of the high priest Ahutoru, who was also the first Tahitian to go to Europe in 1769. Along with dance, I have been learning many different aspects of Tahitian culture. I look forward to sharing this part of my culture with all who are interested. Students are encouraged to wear a comfortable shirt or tank top and a pareo or sarong. Tahiti dance honors the beauty of women of all ages, shapes and sizes, Hinanui-Sterett said. I will show you how to wear your sarong. Those who do not have a sarong are welcome to attend in a pair of shorts. Tahitian dancing is done in bare feet.
