MARYSVILLE For the second year in a row, the Marysville Rotary plans to hand out dictionaries to third-grade students in three local districts, described as part of the groups efforts to increase literacy throughout the area.

Natalie Hinanui-Sterett is a descendant of the Tahitian warrior Chief Toofa who led the revolution against French occupation in the 1800s. She is offering a class on the dance of the Pacific Islands at Movement Arts in Arlington from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday mornings Oct. 28 through Nov. 18.
James Madisons bronze sculpture is part of a special exhibit featuring three generations of the Tulalip Madison family at the Northlight Gallery at Everett Community College, 2000 Tower St. in north Everett, two blocks west of North Broadway through Nov. 2. A Native American family with a long history of artistic expression, the show includes work by father Frank Madison Sr., son Robert Madison, son Steve Madison and grandson James Madison. Their work ranges from traditional to modern, with paintings and artwork in glass, bronze and wood. A community reception with the artists is from 5 – 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26 in the gallery.
SMOKEY POINT A Lakewood-area resident with a Stanwood address, Coleen Allen paints outstanding close-ups of flowers as well as animals, especially horses, and still lifes. Although its not happening at the moment, Allen said she has supporter herself with her art in the past.
Marysville-Pilchuck High School Band Director John Rants is pleased to announce that Marysville Marching Tomahawks placed third in its division in its inaugural event in competitive field marching.
MARYSVILLE Pumpkin pushing paid off for children as the Marysville Rotary Club handed out checks to Arlington, Lakewood and Marysville schools last weekend. Over the last seven years the noon group has contributed more than $110,000 to help literacy efforts in the three north Snohomish County districts by selling pumpkins and concessions, with lots of free fun on the side.
MARYSVILLE Students bond more closely with teachers and respond positively to higher expectations in smaller learning environments, according to one educational expert who told the Marysville School Board that fear of the unknown is a common thread for parents and students among the 2,000 schools in America that have already made the switch to smaller academies.

MARYSVILLE It was a girls day out last weekend at the 10th Annual Save Our Waves event, where more than 200 Girl Scouts from Snohomish County plucked and planted the banks of the middle fork of Quilceda Creek.
MARYSVILLE Residents near the new Lakewood Crossing shopping center are livid over traffic in the northern part of town and are demanding changes to nearby residential streets swamped with cars during the weekend shopping rush. Many say that traffic will not let them out of their neighborhoods during peak shopping times.
