MARYSVILLE — With the ever-present possibility of periodic rainstorms bearing down on our area and region, the city of Marysville is encouraging its residents and businesses to prepare themselves for bouts of significant rainfall, which can lead to potential flooding, debris flows and mudslides.
The city is now providing free sand and bags for residents to make their own sandbags. The public may pick up sand and bags at the Public Works Building at 80 Columbia Ave. in downtown Marysville during its regular business hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., or at the city’s materials storage site at 100th Street NE and 67th Avenue NE anytime.
Gov. Chris Gregoire’s Executive Policy Adviser Teresa Bernsten told the House Transportation Committee Thursday that the governor’s ferry system reorganization plan is patterned after successful ferry system operations in other parts of the U.S. and Canada.
MARYSVILLE — With a mid-year budget shortfall of roughly $1 million, Marysville School District cabinet staff took the step on Jan. 10 of tightening their own belts.
With the approval of the Marysville School District Board of Directors, MSD Superintendent Dr. Larry Nyland resolved to take 10 furlough days, the equivalent of a 4 percent pay cut for this year. Assistant Superintendent Gail Miller likewise pledged 10 furlough days from each of Nyland’s five fellow school district cabinet staff members.

Gov. Christine Gregoire, again citing the state’s fiscal crisis, targeted employee pension and health care costs for major spending cuts as she outlined for legislators Tuesday in her State of the State address the difficult budget they must balance during the legislative session this year.

MARYSVILLE — The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory warning of possible snow and a light chance of freezing rain on Tuesday evening.
Jon Nehring is asking the city of Marysville’s citizens to retain him as their mayor.
Nehring was unanimously appointed by the Marysville City Council on Aug. 2, 2010, to serve the remainder of former Mayor’s Dennis Kendall’s term, and on Jan. 9, Nehring announced that he’s running to serve a a full term as mayor this November.
MARYSVILLE — The Marysville School District will be conducting staff and public forums on the state’s mid-school year budget cuts on Jan. 13.
The Marysville School District Board Room, located at 4220 80th St. NE, will serve as the site for a 3 p.m. forum for secondary school staff, a 4:15 p.m. forum for elementary school staff and a 7 p.m. community forum that will be open to the public.
