MARYSVILLE — The Downtown Marysville Merchants Association is organizing “A Passport to Christmas” on Saturday Dec. 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
While many holiday shoppers are already gearing up for “Black Friday,” the Arlington and Marysville communities are asking that they keep “Small Business Saturday” in mind as well on Nov. 26.

TULALIP — The Marine Drive Chevron fueling station celebrated its soft opening on the early morning of Nov. 3, as Tulalip Tribal members took part in a blessing ceremony and reflected on the progress that this business venture represents for their people.
“It’s a symbol of how our Tribes are growing and feeding the economy, not just of our base, but on both sides of the freeway,” said Tulalip Tribal Vice Chair Glen Gobin. “It seems to have sprung up overnight. It took 90 days, from start to finish. It’s amazing how everyone came together, working long hours in heavy traffic, to make this happen. That’s great teamwork.”
MARYSVILLE — The Fleet & Family Support Program and WorkSource of Snohomish County will present the Snohomish County Regional Veterans’ Job and Resource Fair on Tuesday, Nov. 8.
The Armed Forces Reserve Center, located at 13610 40th Ave. NE in Marysville, will host the event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., during which veterans will be able meet local employers, find resources and more.
Sequim-based Olympic View Publishing Company announced Nov. 1 the sale of the company to Sound Publishing, a community newspaper group based in Poulsbo, Wash.
MARYSVILLE — Michael Thorn opened Marysville Tobacco Joes two months ago with an eye toward helping his customers cut down on the amount of their money that literally goes up in smoke.
“We all know the price of purchasing smokes is through the roof,” said Thorn, the owner of Tobacco Joes on the corner of State Avenue and Fifth Street. “You can save your money by rolling your own smokes, using our roll-your-own filling station.”
No matter how much Dave Grinnell struggled with his studies growing up, he could always find solace in his enthusiasm for automobiles. When Grinnell was told that he could no longer pursue his previous career in construction due to the wear and tear that it had put on his body, he thought back to his youthful love of classic cars and souped-up rigs, and realized that he had an opportunity to help out the kids of today who face scholastic challenges similar to those he overcame.
Jake McNeal is a newcomer to Marysville and Arlington, but in many ways his new hometowns remind him of the ones where he grew up in Oregon. “It’s a lot like Beaverton,” said McNeal, who recently stepped in as the new reporter for The Marysville Globe and The Arlington Times. “It’s very spacious with a lot of smaller businesses. I’m used to this kind of community. It’s comfortable.”
MARYSVILLE — After opening stores in Tulalip and Arlington, Walmart is on track to open a store in Marysville.
Gloria Hirashima, chief administrative officer for the city of Marysville, noted that the city had approved Walmart’s plans in 2006, after public hearings that ran from 2005 through 2006, and added that the Snohomish County Superior Court upheld that decision in 2006, over the protests of a citizens’ group.
MARYSVILLE — The 13-week “Financial Peace University” course is continuing in Marysville this fall.
Allen Creek Community Church, located at 7314 44th Ave. NE, will host the classes starting on Monday, Oct. 3, at 6:30 p.m.
The Victory Foursquare Church, located at 11911 State Ave., will host the classes starting on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 6:30 p.m.
FPU is intended to teach families and individuals how to plan their money usage in order to free themselves of debt and build lasting wealth.
