TULALIP — Beth Hauck and Melissa Gilbertson both graduated from Marysville-Pilchuck High School in 1993, and they’ve since teamed up to benefit their hometown in an eye-catching way.

Gilbertson is an accountant and Hauck is a Gene Juarez Academy graduate with 17 years of experience in hairstyling, and through Salon de Porres, they plan to sponsor and support Marysville youth sports.

“It’s named for the Catholic saint of charity,” said Hauck, referring to St. Martin de Porres. “We started this business to have fun and we’re hoping to give back to the community.”

Salon de Porres opened this fall in Suite O at 8825 34th Ave. NE in Quil Ceda Village. While the salon’s planned staff of 12 stylists numbers only six now, Hauck noted that she and Gilbertson are interested in hiring qualified Tulalip Tribal members to fill up their ranks.

“We’d like to expand with a fully licensed esthetician and permanent makeup artist within the next six months,” Hauck said.

The lavishly decorated and recently remodeled 1,300-square-foot shop already provides extensions, waxing, California smoothing to straighten curly hair, corrective color repairs, Balayage, retail hair products, FeatherLocks feather and fashion jewelry, and even wedding services.

“Our stylists are required to continuously update their education by attending classes to stay on top of new trends,” Hauck said.

Gilbertson cited the popularity of the salon’s Botox treatments, which last for eight to nine months, as well as the benefit of being surrounded by such a variety of other shops.

“On Sundays, you can even watch football here,” Gilbertson said.

Salon de Porres is open Tuesdays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, you may call them at 360-716-2929 or email them at salondeporres@gmail.com.
