The good news for the Lakewood football team is that mathematically they can still qualify for postseason play.
The bad news is that the Cougars will have to win their remaining four games after getting blown out by undefeated Cascade Conference leader Archbishop Murphy 77-6 Friday, Sept. 29.
Lakewood dropped to 0-3 in league play and 0-4 overall while A.M. improved to a perfect 3-0, 5-0.
The lone score for the Cougars came with 11 ticks on the clock and sophomore quarterback Andrew Campbell hit classmate Nick Borisov with a 43-yard touchdown pass.
First-year head coach Dan Teeter said despite the lopsided score it was nice to have the crowds support in the waning moments.
Nick was the inside receiver to the right side and even though he bobbled it a time or two he was able to come down with it, Teeter said.
It was pretty exciting. It was nice to have the crowd support even though it was a meaningless touchdown. It sure meant a lot to the kids.
He said in addition to the success of sophomore duo Campbell and Borisov, his team learned the important lesson of being in the weight room and what a quality program (A.M.) looks like.
At this point we need to continue to work on ourselves, Teeter said. And focus on the next opponent (undefeated Granite Falls). We still have the opportunity to go out there and win four games. Its important for these guys to experience some success. It would be a great way for the seniors to go out and the allow the returning players something to look forward to next season.
The Cougars travel to Granite Falls Friday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. and return home for homecoming a fortnight later at 7 p.m. to face Coupeville.
