MARYSVILLE The M-P junior varsity and varsity wrestling squads had opposite results against rival Arlington at home Thursday, Jan. 18.
The JV team defeated the Eagles 41-31 and their varsity counterparts battled down to the final round of the heavyweight bout before falling 34-32.
M-P fell to 1-5 in league competition and 4-6 overall while AHS improved to 1-4, 10-5.
The Tommies began the meet with a 13-0 defeat at 103-lb. freshman Brian Donaldson.
The underclassman led 2-0 after the first period and expanded the lead to 7-0 after two before coming away with the shutout.
Junior Trong Dinh took only 16 seconds to pin Arlington sophomore Kellen Haynes and give the hosts an early 10-0 lead.
Freshman Jake Lervold (119-lb.) fell behind 2-0 after one period to fellow class of 2010 member Chris Berg and went on to lose 15-4 for Arlingtons first victory.
Senior co-captain Richard Templeman (125-lb.) pinned Arlington junior Dom Mangini at 1:05 into their match.
Competing in his last home match as a senior, Templeman described his match as exciting.
I think I have done pretty good this season, he said. With the most recent victory he is now 15-5 on the season.
After losing back-to-back matches at 130-lb. and 135-lb., M-Ps Jeremy Dormaier brought the crowd to their feet with a 2-1 victory.
Based on crowd reaction alone, Dormaier seemed to have the first real exciting competition of the evening.
Senior Jesse Masten pinned Arlington senior Greg Brager at 48 seconds into the second round to help M-P regain the lead at 25-19.
M-P lost three matches in a row before senior 215-lb heavyweight Jason Wilder won a 9-0 decision to edge Arlington 32-31 heading into the final and decisive 285-lb. match.
With both teams standing and applauding, sophomore Bryant Dickerson got off to a quick 4-1 advantage before losing 5-4 in the closing seconds.
Veteran coach Craig Iversen said he felt pretty good about his teams performance overall.
