The M-P swim and dive team loses two league meets to end nine-day stretch of competition

Thursday, Dec. 14, M-P lost to Snohomish 127-59 in a Wesco North meet.

Thursday, Dec. 14, M-P lost to Snohomish 127-59 in a Wesco North meet.
Veteran coach Scott Knowles said the team was focusing on different things against the Panthers, and rested some people to be used for different events than normal.
One of the hardest things was that it was our fourth meet in nine days, Knowles said of the scheduling.
Unlike wrestling and basketball, swimming does not usually schedule meets during the Christmas break and consequently has more competitions in a shorter amount of time.
It is really hard to get up for that last meet. I was really pleased and thought the kids went out there and performed well.
Sophomore Trevor LeValley won the 200-yard individual medley in a 4A state qualifying time of 2:03.46. He also won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:57.18.
Records Snohomish 2-0 in league and overall. M-P 1-1, 1-3.
Tuesday, Dec. 12, M-P narrowly lost to Kamiak 96-90 at home in a non-league meet.
The meet was tied and came down to the 400-yard freestyle relay, but the Knights were able to come out on top of both the relay and meet.
Knowles said it was by far the best time of the season for both teams.
Sophomore Gabe Lopez won the 100-yard backstroke in a 4A state qualifying time of 57.48 seconds.
Knowles said Lopezs state qualifying finish was the highlight of the meet.
It is pretty amazing that a kid like Gabe, who has only been swimming competitively for one-year, has already qualified for state, Knowles said.
That is a tribute to his hard work and the Marlins program.
Knowles said M-P has also qualified LeValley in the 200-yard individual medley and 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard medley relay teams for 4A state competition.
We are really ahead of pace which will help for things toward the end of the season. I think we will do better at state this year as last year we didnt have anyone qualified until the district meet. Some of these kids will be freshmen and sophomores.
Classmate Trevor LeValley won the 100-yard butterfly in 57.97 seconds and the 100-yard freestyle in 51.52.
The 200-yard medley team of Lopez, sophomore Andy Abadam, LeValley and junior Aaron Goff touched the wall first in a time of 1:45.71.
Freshman Oliver Durand won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:59.43.
Junior diver Taylor Gibson topped all divers with 212.40 points.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Goff, Abadam, and seniors Klayton Schaufler and John Henninger were victorious in a time of 1:37.26.
With the narrow defeat, M-P dropped to 1-0 in league competition and 1-2 overall while the Knights are now a perfect 1-0, 3-0.
