SNOHOMISH Despite four second-inning hits, the Tomahawks were unable to get the better of Snohomish, falling 2-1 in their league opener March 18.
A double by Snohomish pitcher Derek Jones put Bubba Rodham in position to score, and the home team went up 1-0 in the first inning.
M-Ps four bats in the second inning helped put together a rally seniors Ryan Botham, Alex Austin and Johnny Kruick all got back-to-back hits on the touted Snohomish lefty, but the Snohomish defense limited M-P to one run by Botham, off a single by right fielder Levi Cartas. It appeared Cartas hit might bring in two runs for the lead and a morale boost against the defending league champs, but Austin remained at third and later got picked off at home plate as Jones found his catcher for the stop and the second out.
Snohomish had several impressive outs in the field to keep Marysville from scoring again in the game, including stopping Cartas at third base for the second innings third out, and a pass from right field to stop Tyler Holm from advancing home in the fifth inning.
What amounted to the winning run came in the second inning as Snohomish catcher Tom Chandler used errors to move around the bases. Chandler stole home to put the Panthers up 2-1.
In Marysville, Snohomish defeated the Tomahawks 9-5 to complete the sweep.
M-P faces Everett in a two-game series March 25 and 27.
