MARYSVILLE The diving trio of Sarah Clark, Kalyn Thomas and Liz Kuljis swept the top three spots, but M-P was unable to pull off the upset of Wesco North swimming sovereigns Snohomish Sept. 20.
The Panthers won the meet, 99-87.
The Tomahawk team had several strong individual and relay performances. Junior captain Kami Girard won the 100-yard backstroke in a nail-biter over Snohomishs Sarah Shawback, finishing in a state-qualifying time of 1:02.38. Girard more handily won the 100 freestyle in a district time of 57.06.
Another squeaker victory came courtesy freshman Jewel LeValley. In a district-qualifying 2:07.86, LeValley beat Panther Jasmine Labitzke by less than a second in the 200 freestyle.
Junior Melinda Blomberg edged her younger teammate in the 500 freestyle. LeValley finished about 10 seconds behind Blomberg with a 5:54.76 performance.
LeValley, Blomberg, Girard and freshman Amy Renslo completed the 400-freestyle relay just a hair under four minutes. The time was good for second place and about eight seconds of state eligibility.
Renslos 100 butterfly was also tantalizingly close to a state time. Her 1:02.81 was district-eligible and seven-tenths of a second from state.
Among other top finishes: sophomore Leah Gordon finished second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:19.15 and Renslo and LeValley swam a second-place 200-freestyle relay with senior Michaela Caldwell and junior Amanda Vincelette.
