LANGLEY The Lady Tomahawks cross country team qualified for 4A state with their second-place finish Saturday, Oct. 28, at the 2A, 3A and 4A district championships.
The 5K (3.1-mile) race was held on the campus of South Whidbey High School.
At the 4A level the top three teams and 15 individuals qualify to run at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco Saturday, Nov. 4.
Freshman Kaylie Kimmell led the Lady Tomahawks with a seventh-place overall finish time of 19:48.
Sophomores Lauren Ainsworth (20:05) and Marissa Schafer (20:06) finished 13-14th, respectively, junior Haley Nemra came in 17th (20:24) and senior Megan Crenshaw rounded out the scoring with a 24th place time of 20:43.
Coach Randy Edens praised the effort of the entire team, but acknowledged that the Lady Tomahawks are able to close the gap at the state level.
We placed 11th last year and if we can get four girls under 20 minutes hopefully we can place between sixth and eight, he said.
Although no boys qualified for state, senior Jesse Masten placed 33rd overall in a time of 17:09.
He said despite falling short of qualifying for state he felt pretty good with his performance.
I felt like I raced good and am pretty excited about the future of this program, Masten said.
Our team has been improving every year that I have been here and I am excited to come back and watch them compete next year.
