Gambling against M-P just leads to a long night for Stanwood

MARYSVILLE – Stanwood’s coaches may want to try going to Gambler’s Anonymous.

Apparently thinking they needed to gamble to win at Marysville-Pilchuck Friday night, they opened the game with an onside kick.

As what usually happens when you gamble, it failed.

Left with a short field, M-P scored quickly on an Edgar Martinez 30-yard field goal.

Later in the first quarter, with a fourth down on their own end of the field, they went for it. They again failed, leaving M-P with another short field.

M-P again scored quickly when QB Jake Elwood connected with Dillon Kuk on a 40-yard pass play. Running back Jordan Justice added a 10-yard run as the Tomahawks led 16-0 at the end of the first quarter and coasted to a 56-22 Wesco 3A North win.

After a Stanwood field goal, Jordan scored on a 60-yard jaunt, Kuk caught a 34-yard pass from Elwood and Dylan Carson scored on a 9-yard run to make it 36-3 at halftime.

In the third quarter, after a Stanwood score, Jay Gray went in from 1 yard, Carson tallied a TD on a 30-yarder, then Carson Kuchera scored on an exciting 91-yard run in the fourth. Stanwood added a couple of late scores to make it look closer than it really was.

Elwood only passed 7 times but connected on 5 for 138 yards. Kuk caught four of them for 124 yards.

Justice had 153 yards on just 7 tries and Carson 104 on 13.

Arlington 14, Marysville Getchell 13

It doesn’t matter what their records are, MG has played Arlington tough the past two years.

Last season, MG pulled off a major upset, and while it didn’t happen this year they came close.

Charger QB Josiah Koellmer threw a touchdown pass late in the game, but instead of going for the tie MG went for the 2-point conversion and the win. It failed, and the Eagles, 4-1, escaped with the victory.

Koellmer also ran one in from 2 yards out for a score in the third period for the Chargers, 1-4.

Eagle QB Trent Nobach connected with Cade Younger for a 22-yard fourth-quarter score, and Cole Cramer kicked what ended up being the winning point. Jasen Roskelley’s 25-yard run in the first quarter put the home team up 7-0 at the half.

Lynden 37, Lakewood 6

The Cougars unbeaten season came to an abrupt end Friday at Lynden, 4-1.

QB Jared Taylor gave the Cougars their only touchdown in the first quarter with a 4-yard run.

Lyndenis 2-0 in 2A Northwest Sky Division play, while Lakewood is 1-1, 4-1 overall.
