MOUNT VERNON – Arlington’s baseball team won its first game at state Saturday, but fell in the state quarterfinals for the second-straight year.

The Eagles won their first game 2-0 over Eastside Catholic, but lost a tough one in 10 innings to Edmonds Woodway 8-7.

Pitching hurt Arlington down the stretch as E-W scored three in the 10th, on a passed ball, walk, three batters hit by pitches and an infield single.

Jake Russell’s two-out RBI double pulled the Eagles within a run in the bottom of the 10th before a pop-up ended the game.

Arlington, 21-5, before last year hadn’t been to state since 1994, but it won the Wesco North regular-season title and earned the third seed out of the district tournament.

Eagles coach Scott Striegel said, “They had the expectation that we were playing next weekend” at the state finals at Safeco Field in Seattle.

The game was a back-and-forth battle throughout. E-W opened with a 2-0 lead in the third, but Arlington scored three in the bottom of the inning to take the lead on a home run by Jack Sheward. After E-W tied it in the fifth, they took the lead back in the seventh. But Jack Sheward doubled in two runs to tie the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the inning. Jack Sheward knocked in five runs in the game.

Against Eastside Catholic, brothers Tristan and Jack Sheward combined to strike out 14 hitters in a complete-game three-hitter.

Tristan Sheward struck out 13 and allowed three hits. Jack Sheward gave the Eagles the only run they needed in the second. He was hit by a pitch, stole second and third, and scored on Russell’s two-out single. Owen Bishop reached on an error and scored when Gavin Rork followed with a double to left for their other run.
