TACOMA — In high school girls high jump, an inch is like a mile.

So Yareli Ochoa of Lakewood accomplished quite a milestone in winning the Class 2A state championship Thursday with a leap of 5 feet, 4 inches. That is 2 inches higher than she’d ever gone before.

The meet continues Friday and Saturday at Mount Tahoma High School.

Ochoa, a four-time top-10 state placer, cleared 5-2 as a freshman and had matched that several times. Ochoa placed ninth in state as a freshman, fourth as a sophomore and fifth as a junior, each time clearing the bar 2 inches higher than before.

Cougar teammate Dylan Madan placed seventh in the pole vault at 13 feet.

Cade Tucker of Marysville-Pilchuck was eighth in the shot put with a heave of 56 feet, 6.5 inches. He was the only local who placed in the 3A championships on the first day.

Friday, in the finals of the shot put, Jon Cox of Lakewood was third with a toss of 53 feet, 9 inches.

Julia Parra of Arlington finished sixth in the discuss with her throw of 119 feet, 11 inches.

And Kobe Gray of Arlington placed eighth in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet.

Spencer Solvberg came up big for Lakewood Friday, winning his heat in the 800 meters in 1:57.17. He is now seeded second for the final.

In the 100, Michai Harris is seeded 17th for the next round, after placing seventh in his heat with a time of 11.57.

Ochoa is seeded 14th in the next round after placing fourth in her heat in 12.88 seconds.

Yet to compete are: Paige Shimkus in the javelin; and the 4 by 100 relay team of Madan, Jordan Gonzalez, George Toponce and Spencer Fleming.

In 3A, Trina Davis of M-P is seeded 10th after finishing her heat in the 100 in 12.75 seconds. Kiarra Green of MG is seeded 16th with a clocking of 12.99.

Gregory Panther of MG will be seeded eighth for the final in the 800 with his time of 1:59.04.

At district last week

Lakewood boasted three district champions in the 2A meet at home, while Trina Davis of Marysville-Pilchuck and Julia Parra of Arlington starred in the 3A meet at Shoreline.

As a result they are going to state this weekend at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.

For Lakewood, Paige Shimkus won the javelin with a toss of 143 feet, 1 inch. Yareli Ochoa won the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 4 inches for the Cougars. Jon Cox set a personal record in the shot put with a throw of 52 feet, 5.75 inches to win that title.

Ochoa also qualified for state in two other events. She was second in the high jump with a leap of 5-foot-1 and third in the 100 meters with a clocking of 12.73 seconds.

Lakewood is sending two athletes to state in the discus. Cambee Burbee was second with a toss of 154 feet, 8 inches, and teammate Cole Nelson was third with a mark of 141 feet, 2 inches.

Dylan Maden placed second in the pole vault with his mark of 12 feet, 7 inches. And Spencer Solvberg was third in the 800 meters with a time of 1:57.94.

A number of other Cougars placed fifth, but only the top four advanced to state.

In the 3A meet, Davis won both the 100 and 200 meters, with times of 12.41 seconds and 25.79 seconds. Her time in the 200 beat the school record by a second, an amazing performance for such a short race.

“I felt good,” Davis told The Herald. “I’ve come back from an injury, and I’ve been getting (physical therapy) every day before the meet. She was second by just two one-hundredths of a second in the 100 last year at state.

“I’m super motivated (to win a state title),” Davis added. “I didn’t think I was going to do the 200 this year, I wanted to drop it, but my coach made me run it, and now I’m out here getting first and setting a school record while still injured, so who knows?”

Arlington sophomore Parra also won two events, the shot put at 38 feet 11 inches, and the discus.
