Perhaps reflecting the closeness of the matches, neither of the two Tomahawks who won both their matches that week did so by a pin. At 125 pounds, Matt Burns defeated his Everett opponent by a 15-6 decision and his Stanwood challenger by a 12-3 major decision. Luke Shumaker also had a 16-1 decision against Everett and a 12-3 major decision against Stanwood at 130 pounds.
Of the Everett meet, which the Tomahawks lost 37-30, M-P coach Craig Iversen said, I dont think we were at our best that night, and kind of came out a little down which is disappointing when you dont feel like youre performing at the level youre able to. Everett did a nice job and we were afraid we would take it into Thursday.
M-P turned it around, though, beating Stanwood 35-32.
M-P trailed 32-29 coming into the last match when, at 160 pounds, Ryan Mead came up with a pin for the victory.
It just came down to a neat team effort. We knew it would be a close one, Iversen said, adding of the season, I think our only blemish has been that Everett match, and not on score, but our energy. We were very, very pleased with how they bounced back. And hopefully thats part of the growth, which is very tough in athletics.
