MARYSVILLE — A longstanding record swimming record fell in the Marysville-Pilchuck pool Sept. 17.

For more than a decade, the fastest girls 400 freestyle relay in Tomahawk history had been 3:48.75 — almost a second slower than the state qualifying standard of 3:47.90, set by Emily Hutson, Richelle Little, Sarah Imholt and Tracie Valentine.

But now, the M-P girls have their first outright state time in the event and a new school record, set by teammates Hannah Taylor, Megan Shoemaker, Kendall Vincelette and Jewel LeValley. Taylor almost matched her state-qualifying, school-record time from the week before in the first split, but it was LeValley who shed half a second from her previous best 100-yard anchor leg that ensured the girls would meet their goal against Meadowdale.

“I knew we were really close to the record,” LeValley said. “I couldn’t see Kendall’s time (the third leg), but I saw Hannah and Megan’s and I knew how close we were. They went their fastest times as well.”

It was a grand finale to the Tomahawks’ 151-32 win over Wesco South team Meadowdale, just a few points off of a perfect score.

Taylor set another school record and turned in two state times, beating Kami Girard’s year-old backstroke record and joining LeValley as a second Tomahawk with a state-qualifying 200 freestyle swim.

Diver Sarah Clark was about two points off of her school record for six dives, leading teammates Marysa Eastman and Alayna Fordon in that competition.

“At this point in the season, you just want to see where you’re at,” said swim coach Jaci Legore Hodgins. “You’re fresh and excited, but you want to make sure you’re balanced and ready at the end.”

Fourteen district qualifying times came in as well. Sophomores Karoline Schaufler, Geina Malavolti and Vincelette each had district times in two events, with Malavolti and Vincelette both qualifying in the same heat of the 50 freestyle and Schaufler and Malavolti qualifying in the 100 breaststroke. Junior Amanda Collins also had two district times, in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke, while fellow junior Alicia Malavolti swam a fourth district time in the 100 breaststroke. Junior Melody Travis qualified for districts in the 500 freestyle and LeValley in the 200 individual medley. Senior Leah Gordon also qualified in the 200 IM while Shoemaker met the standard in the 50 freestyle and 100 fly.

With one relay record down, the Tomahawks have their eyes on the remaining two.

“We should be able to (break them) and we should be able to soon,” said LeValley. “We’re flirting with them.”
