Area soccer team wins
Challenge Cup
The local Pacific Premier FC soccer team won the Girls U-13 division of the Washington State Youth Soccer Associations Challenge Cup.
The title came down to a 1-0 decision over Sammamish-based Cascade FC. In the March 2 game, defender Courtney Coombs scored the teams only goal in the 21st minute. It was the final game in a tournament full of 1-0 games in Pacific Premiers favor. Goalkeeper Cassandra Hart gave up just one goal throughout their five-game tournament run.
The Marysville-based team is coached by Todd Wright and Dan Kelley, and composed of 12- and 13-year-olds from Marysville, Lake Stevens, Granite Falls and Mount Vernon.

Marysville AAU competes in
end-of-season tourney
Led by a second-place finish by their eighth-grade team, the Marysville AAU program competed in the Wesco end-of-season tourney Feb. 28 through March 2.
The eighth-graders exceeded their fifth-seed, beating Everett, Jackson and Lake Stevens before meeting Shorecrest in the championship game.
Each of the Marysville squads won at least one game in the double-elimination tournament, with the fifth-graders pulling off a none-too-shabby sixth-place finish, falling in a consolation game to Glacier Peak. The sixth- and seventh-grade teams both finished in 11th.

Billy Rist makes second-team

Lakewood senior Billy Rist was named to the Cascade Conferences second team for his performance with the Cougar basketball team.
After losing much of last years squad to graduation, Rist helped navigate a relatively untested Lakewood team through injuries and a tough conference to a 5-16 season where they tied in league standings with Granite Falls. Cedarcrest, that finished top among the leagues 2A teams, gathered the most kudos with three players and their coach named.
