Darrington football squashes Nooksack Valley

The improved Loggers team romped over Nooksack Valley 27-7. Playing an away game and facing off against the officiating as well as the opposing team, Darrington overcame a myriad strange penalties and two touchdowns called back.
Some of those calls were things Ive never even seen before said Coach Fred Emerson. Last year Nooksack beat the Loggers 49-19 and it, wasnt that close according to Emerson.
This time around the defense played really well, holding Nooksack to under 100 yards total offense. Mike Parris intercepted two passes, including one he ran back 43 yards to set up a Darrington touchdown.
Conner Rounds had 14 solo tackles, flying all over the field.
We didnt get as much yardage as I thought we did, said Emerson. But we held them in their own territory for a majority of the night.
On offense Mark Jones kicked a 35-yard field goal and scored two rushing touchdowns. Justin ODell threw a 35-yard halfback pass to Cory Hobeskeland for a touchdown. Chris Vargus dominated in the trenches. Despite not turning out for the team last year, Vargus has been an excellent addition as a senior.

Darrington volleyball

The Loggers girls volleyball team battled LaConner at home on Thursday Sept. 13. In a tightly contest match, the Darrington girls lost 20-25, 24-26, 25-17, 11-25. In the second set Darrington held a 22-17 edge before LaConner went on a big run and came out ahead.
LaConner, the reigning 2B state champions from last year, has been undefeated the last two seasons, without losing a single set in 2006. They returned three starters from last year including a 61 middle hitter Cora Kellerman who finished with 18 kills against Darrington.
The team as a whole played well, said Coach Greg Powell. Caitlin Pendergrass, our right side hitter, played an excellent match and finished with 11 kills and three blocks.
The team plays again Sept. 20 at home against Shoreline Christian.

Arlington volleyball

Coach Cari Britt likes the early improvement from her young team this season. After struggling with Burlington-Edison in their first match, the team showed much better form against Oak Harbor and Snohomish. Despite losing both matches, Britt recognizes the strides made from her players.
We are a completely different team now, said Britt. We are being more aggressive and confident. We are close to being the team I know we can be.
As far as individual improvements, several players made big advances over the course of the first few weeks.
Kyra Prause and Casey Swinney stood out to me, said Coach Britt. Kyra is becoming a better setter each week. Casey played exceptionally well on defense.
Britt has instituted a focus on defensive coverage and blocking skills with her eyes on the Sept. 20 match-up with Meadowdale.

HCP football nearly knocks off powerhouse Lummi

The Highland Christian Prep Knights lost 36-32 to Lummi on Saturday, Sept. 15.
Lummi finished last season playing in the state championship game and represented a major test for the Knights. Highland battled them all the way to the final whistle as John Enge caught three touchdown passes and Stormee Brown ran for one. Vince Kurtzenacker rushed for a touchdown and two extra-point conversions. Kurtzenacker also threw for a touchdown. For the defense, Craig Crawford finished with two interceptions.
HCP will face the Darrington JV later this week.
