MG girls soccer team loses state playoff game 1-0

GIRLS SOCCER

Marysville Getchell’s first trip to state didn’t last long.

The Chargers girls soccer team lost to Prairie 2-1 in their first match.

A penalty kick in the 60th minute turned out to be the game-winning goal.

MG actually scored after 20 minutes to take a 1-0 halftime lead.

The Falcons scored early in the second half to tie it, setting the stage for the penalty kick.

MG, 10-5-4, was the first Charger team in the school’s history to make state. MG also lost Nov. 4 in the district championship game, 1-0 to Edmonds-Woodway.

Junior midfielder Trina Davis led Marysville-Pilchuck to a 2-0 win over Ferndale in the 3A District 1 playoff match that same Saturday. Davis scored a goal and assisted on the other. But the Tommies were eliminated in their second game that day, falling to Shorecrest 2-0 in a loser out game to state.

FOOTBALL

The two local teams left in the playoffs were both trounced Nov. 3. At Rainier Beach, Arlington fell to the home team 43-13. Eagle QB Anthony Whitis passed 2 yards to Cooper Cummings and 11 yards to Campbell Hudson for the Arlington scores.

At Archbishop Murphy, Kyle Gordon ran for two scores and caught two TD passes as the home team whipped Lakewood 43-7. QB Austin Lane threw a 41-yard pass to George Toponce for the Cougars only score. Ray Pimental of AM ran for two scores and added 187 yards rushing.

VOLLEYBALL

Arlington beat Shore-wood 3-2 Nov. 2. Arlington then played Snohomish Nov. 4 and lost by that same score.

Against the Panthers that Saturday, Arlington played much better defense than it had of late, and therefore its offense was clicking better. Even though Snohomish had an experience advantage – with 13 upperclassmen compared to four – and height – eight over 5-foot-8 compared to five – the games went back and forth throughout.

Spikes by MaryCatherine Meno and Arianna Bilby kept it close, but Snohomish took the first game 25-18.

Serving by Michaela Camlin and spikes by Bilby and Reese Talbot put the Eagles in front by as much as 11-7 and 16-13 in the second game. But then the Panther defense started covering everything, while finding holes in Arlington’s “d”. The Panthers took the second game 25-20.

With their backs to the wall, and facing elimination, Arlington came back to win the third and fourth games, before losing in the last set. Bilby stood out serving and at the net with spikes and blocks as Arlington took the third game 26-24.

In the 2A volleyball tournament, Lakewood blanked Anacortes 3-0, but then lost 3-1 to Liberty to be eliminated.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Arlington boys cross country team placed ninth at the state 3A championships in Pasco Nov. 4.

Leading the way was Noah Loftis, who was 35th in 16 minutes, 11.3 seconds. Blake Landry was 39th, Quincy Fankhauser 61st, Favian Villanueva 86th, Kobi Starling 92nd, Nathaniel Alexander 109th and Dawson Andrews 112th.

Gregory Panther of Marysville Getchell, who qualified individually, was 56th in 16:22.40.

Arlington also qualified three girls at districts.

They were led by Mary Andrews, who was 50th in 19 minutes, 30.3 seconds. In 67th place was teammate Jensyn Smith, and Paige Nelson was 82nd.

In 2A, Lakewood had three runners competing. Adam Cross was 199th for the boys. Madison Howe and Callie Buchanan finished 73rd and 74th.
