MARYSVILLE Junior Tyler Marzolf tied his personal best game, helping lift Marysville golf to a third-place finish in a close five-team competition April 17.
With a 78-stroke game at Cedarcrest Golf Course, Marzolf led his five teammates and finished just one stroke out of the top five individual performances when M-P hosted Arlington, Lake Stevens, Stanwood and Oak Harbor.
Anchored by three finishes in the top five, Arlington won the match. Arlington junior Chad Heise was the invitationals medalist, finishing the par 70 Cedarcrest course in 71 strokes. Along with 75-stroke games from senior Alex Hedlund and freshman Jake Parduhn, the Eagles five best scores totaled 384.
The Lake Stevens team placed second with 394 strokes among their top five players, averaging a 79-point game per player.
The Tommie golfers finished very closely from top to bottom as just eight strokes separated Marzolf from his teams fifth golfer for a team total of 416. Junior Justin Freeman had M-Ps next best finish at 83, followed by sophomores Kyle Hanks at 84 and Nathan Pratt at 86. Freshman Brandon Caldwell played the course in 85 strokes.
Marysville is a young team and struggling to be competitive with the Wesco teams, M-P head coach Mike Otness said during the guys play.
After the match he added, That was a good day for Tyler. It was a good finish for Marysville coming in third, it was a good finish for us.
Marzolf had a strong finish on the final hole of the day.
He capped his personal best round by chipping in for a birdie, Otness said. On the 18th hole, a par five, he chipped in with four for the birdie.
The same five teams met again April 19. Proving how closely the Wesco teams compete, the Stanwood team that finished fourth at Cedarcrest tied Arlington for first at Kayak Point Golf Course.
In the same match, Marysville finished fifth.
Kayak can be a little intimidating, especially the first couple times you play it. Its a narrow tree-lined course with lots of hills. We struggled at Kayak. Our scores were not too good, Otness said.
Unlike their average mid-80s performances at Cedarcrest, only the top two Tomahawks, Pratt and Freeman, finished in the 80s at Kayak Point.
I think it was 94, 96, 98, 105 were the other four. Scores were definitely 10 strokes higher, the coach said.
As divisional and district play looms, the Tomahawks hope to get a good look at the courses where they expect to compete for the postseason, including a trip to Gallery Golf Course in Oak Harbor before the district competition.
Some of us have played that course, but we will make a trip over there to make sure that everyone gets a chance to play it, Otness said.
